My husband and I, both in our 60s, are travelling to Copenhagen in September for a 23-day cruise. Because of the length of the flights we would like a stopover in both directions but not in the same city or country, any suggestions? K. Babinski, Green Point
The two most popular cities for stopovers between Australia and Europe are Singapore and Dubai.
Both cities offer the possibility of a much-needed break in that long-haul flight.
What you could do is book a return flight from Sydney to Singapore with any one of a number of carriers, and Singapore Airlines would be my choice since they operate several flights daily on that route, and also good deals on hotels.
You could then break your journey in Singapore for however long you choose on the outward journey then take an Emirates flight from Singapore to Copenhagen.
This would travel via Dubai and on the return journey with Emirates to Singapore you could use Dubai as your stopover city.
You could also reverse this and use Dubai as your stopover city on the outward leg and Singapore on the return journey.
You could even choose another East Asian city besides Singapore for your stopover, for example flying with Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong, Thai Airways to Bangkok or Malaysian to Kuala Lumpur.
