What can I do with a seven hour stopover in Zurich, Switzerland?

How to fill in the time in Zurich? I have a seven-hour stopover (4-11pm) at the end of January.

While it's quick and easy to get into Zurich from the airport by train, by the time you clear immigration and customs you'll be lucky to get into the city before dark.

For example sunset on January 25 is at 5:15 pm.

It's also going to be cold, but all the same I'd seize the opportunity to see something of the city, as well as getting some fresh air.

Stretching from the main railway station to the lake, Zurich's most famous street is Bahnhofstrasse​ and it's a beauty, dedicated to all things Swiss – chocolates, watches, cafes and money.

This is also one of the world's most expensive shopping streets, a wrap of famous and expensive brands from Armani to Zegna​.

If you're anything like me, by the time you get to Tiffany & Co., close to the lake end of the street, you'll be feeling poor. 

On the other side of the Limmat River, running more or less parallel with Bahnhofstrasse, Munstergasse​ is a narrow, cobblestoned corridor lined with cafes and small, funky designer shops.

On the right, at the top of a postage-stamp square is Conditorei Schober, a high temple to the confectioner's art, where you might stop for a treat.

Take a peek at the upper level, especially the salon to the left of the staircase, which is decorated with furnishings that might have come from an 18th century French aristocrat's boudoir.

Opening hours are until 11 pm from Thursday to Saturday, until 7 pm other days.

Beyond, Munstergasse takes a downward slant as it crosses Muhlegasse​ and becomes Niederdorfstrasse​.

From here it's a succession of bars and restaurants all the way to the big Zurich Central tram stop.

Turn left to cross the Bahnhofbrucke​ Bridge and on the left is the Co-op store, which happens to have a fine cheese selection, all legal imports if you're planning a slap-up, Swiss-style fondue party on your return to Australia.

The main station is right in front of you.
