Ah, clear, tranquil water, oh how we have missed you during the cold, harsh winter! If all this recent sunshine is getting you in the mood to head off to some of the world’s most beautiful islands, lakes and beaches, we know exactly how you feel.

There is nothing quite like swimming in the clearest lagoons and waters, lazing away the days and escaping from reality. Dazzling, captivating, and always enchanting, freshwaters are among some of the finer things in life that have the power to brighten our mood, and even change our lives.

1. The Cook Islands

The Cook Islands might have a very dreary name (they are named after Captain James Cook who arrived on the islands in 1773), but their waters are anything but miserable. Situated to the east of Australia, they are home to just around 15,000 people who get to enjoy their clear blue waters on a daily basis. Lucky people!

There are 15 islands in total, and altogether they are spread out over an area that is actually as big as India. Known for their white and beaches and blue lagoons, the Cook Islands are our favourite islands.

2. Cocos Island

Okay, scratch that last sentence above. Cocos Island is actually perhaps our all-time favourite island. I don’t know, we can’t decide! They’re all just so nice. With only one permanent resident (a ranger), Cocos Island offers the ultimate in solitude and tranquility. With no one around to bother you, you can snorkel and scuba-dive in the island’s crystal clear blue waters until your heart is content. Located just off Costa Rica, it is also known for its hammerhead sharks. So be careful!

3. Koh Lipe, Thailand

Thailand is hugely popular with tourists, and one glance at the sky blue clear waters of Koh Lipe is enough to make you understand why. Koh Lipe is an island located at the southern tip of Thailand, and it is surrounded by clear, shallow water that is calm and soothing. Koh Lipe also comes with four beaches – north, east, south and west – with the western beach very aptly named Sunset Beach. Now then, doesn’t that sound just heavenly?

4. Australia

Australia might be most famous for kangaroos, barbecues and Russell Crowe, but did you know that the Aussie’s get to enjoy some of the world’s clearest waters day in, day out? You bet your life they do, sport.

The Outback is where you will find most of their paradise blue waters, and we particularly love their red rock caves that hide some of our planets most tranquil waterfalls and lagoons. Idyllic and beautiful, Australia’s ever clear waters are perhaps some of the best things about the vast nation.

5. The Maldives

The Maldives are actually in a bit of bother at the moment, because their sea-levels are rising continuously. The only real upshot of this is that the sea is a gorgeous blue that is as clear as any water out there. The Maldives are well-known to be the closest thing our planet has to Paradise, and this tropical nation located in the Indian Ocean, which is made up of hundreds of islands, is well worth a visit. Dip your toes in these waters, and you’ll never want to leave. Stunning.

6. Sardinia

Sardinian’s are notorious for living long lives, and perhaps one of the contributing factors to their longevity is the crystal clear blue waters they get to enjoy daily. Popular with tourists, Sardinia is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and lakes.

Other treats to enjoy in the Italian island are the Mediterranean monk seal, and the Albino Donkey (yes, honestly). Sun kissed and delightful, Sardinia really is a place to see this year.

7. Virgin Gorda

You literally haven’t seen clear water until you visit Virgin Gorda, the third largest of the British Virgin Islands. The great explorer, Christopher Columbus, rather crudely christened Virgin Gorda “The Fat Virgin” (how rude!), due to the way it looks from above. Fat virgins aside, Virgin Gorda is home to a famous attraction known as The Baths, which is a geological marvel comprised of wondrous formations and heavenly pools.

8. Crater Lake, Oregon

Crater Lake in Oregon was actually formed by the collapse of a volcano almost eight thousand years ago. The fact that it was born from the ashes of a natural disaster has only contributed to its glowing, clean waters that dazzle underneath the shining blue skies. This freshwater lake is simply stunning and reminds you of the captivating beauty of nature. Like a Monet painting, it’s colourful, vibrant and alive with the joy of life. One swim here, and you will literally never want to leave, we promise.

9. Isla Holbox, Mexico

Isla Holbox, Mexico, is a miracle of nature. Whilst Mexico is home to some of the clearest waters on the planet, Isla Holbox gets our vote simply because of its huge expanse of water. Everywhere you look, you see clear blue, from the sky to the sea. It’s also a well-known getaway for a clutch of Hollywood stars who certainly know how to appreciate the finer things in life. Head there while you can, because Isla Holbox is what life was made for.

10. Rio Azul, Argentina

One of the problems with freshwater rivers and lakes is that they can often be mecca’s for oodles of tourists who want a taste (literally) of the action. Rio Azul is another divine tourist attraction that looks as though it’s had its life breathed into by the world’s most beautiful woman. It’s simply gorgeous; glacial, ethereal, and totally safe to drink. Clearest of the clear, bluest of the blue, the waters in Rio Azul are to die for.
