London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, official home to Her Majesty the Queen of England and the largest and richest city in Europe has much to offer the modern tourist. Historical buildings, fantastic shopping and one of the most cosmopolitan cities that there is, here are just ten of the amazing places there are to visit in London:
1. The London Eye
The London Eye, or the Millennium Wheel as it is sometimes known, is great to start a tour of London. On a clear day you can get a panoramic view of London and see for up to 25 miles. It’s a breathtaking experience and a wonderful way to see 55 of London’s most famous landmarks, all in one, thirty minute trip!
2. The British Museum
The British Museum is one of London’s most popular visitor attractions and over six million people visit it every year. The museum is free to enter, although there may be charges for special exhibits, and it has on display one of the finest collections in the world including the famous Elgin marbles and the Rosetta stone.
3. Madame Tussauds
A popular attraction in London is the world famous Madame Tussauds, where you can come face to face with everyone from William Shakespeare to One Direction. Even Her Majesty the Queen is there. What a photo opportunity!
4. Buckingham Palace
We can’t promise that you’ll meet the Queen. But you will get to see some parts of where she lives. Buckingham Palace is now open to visitors in the summer months and you will be able to see the state rooms, the royal carriages and the gardens. Anyone who has any interest in the British Royal Family should make a visit to Buckingham Palace.
5. The Tower of London
Visit the Tower of London and the Yeoman of the Guard, or Beefeaters, as they are better known, it will give you a guided tour of one the world most famous buildings. You can learn about the 900 years of Royal history at the Tower and view the magnificent Crown Jewels.
6. St Pauls Cathedral
St Paul’s cathedral is one of the most iconic buildings on the London Skyline and it has still not been overshadowed by the modern skyscrapers that now surround it. You can take a tour of the inside of the Cathedral and find out more about its history, and visit the famous whispering galley and experience its amazing acoustics.
7. Westminster Abbey
The site of Royal weddings for centuries and most recently, the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Westminster Abbey has been the focal point for celebrations and sadder occasions throughout British History. A must see location for any visit to London.
8. The National gallery
Located in Trafalgar Square and overlooked by Nelsons Column, the National Gallery is the home to thousands of famous works of art from the 13th century all the way through to the 19th Century. General entry is free and you will be able to view works by artists such as Da Vinci, Turner, Rembrandt and Van Gogh.
9. Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge is the iconic bridge in London that is raised to allow tall ships to pass through into what was the port of London. If you want to see the bridge raised, you have to catch it the right time, so check the Tower Bridge website for the dates or find out more about the bridge’s history by visiting the Tower Bridge Exhibition.
10 Jump on a tour bus
One of the best ways to see the sights of London is to take one of the many open top tour buses. They are great value for money, as your ticket lasts for all day and you get on and off where you like, and you get a running commentary, as you travel too.
